Scandinavian Wind - Renewable Energy Consultants

We are a technology consulting company, offering qualified consulting services within renewable energy, focused mainly on the wind energy market. Our work ranges from feasibility studies and strategic business development, to design and construction of whole wind power systems.

We offer a wide range of services to the wind energy industry. Our clients range from international wind power manufacturers who may need help designing a subsystem or a completely new turbine, to developers and utilities needing resources and technical expertise, e.g. advice in choosing wind turbines or developing a project. We also provide research and development (R&D) services within wind power development to the research institutes, consortiums and companies involved in R&D activities.

Professional wind power engineers

Scandinavian Wind has a team of experienced and professional wind power engineers and experts. The team covers every technological discipline needed to design or review a complete wind turbine or wind farm: from its concept and detailed design, through to prototyping, testing, wind farm layout and construction.

Our engineers have more than 20 years of experience in wind turbine designs. The first turbine design, 18 years ago, was rated 3MW. Since then, our team has designed seven different turbine models, ranging from 2.5MW to 4.1MW, with both two and three bladed designs, including gearbox and direct drive concepts. Some of these turbines have been adapted to onshore use, while others have been customised for a harsh offshore environment, mainly in the North Sea area.

We also provide consultancy services for permitting and root cause analysis. Project management is often included in some form in all of our work. Our engineers, project managers and wind power experts are dedicated to the future of renewable energy technologies.

Cold climate project management

Project management, micrositing and testing within the cold climate field has been one of the main focus areas for Scandinavian Wind during recent years. We believe thorough investigation of technology and solutions is very important for a successful execution of a project in a cold climate.

Due diligence

We execute an independent specific study for each client. Scandinavian Wind secures the future asset value by executing:

  • Acquisitions review
  • Technology evaluation
  • Requirement specification
  • Certification review
  • Wind assessments
  • Risk analysis
  • Verification of operating costs
  • Project certification
  • Review of operating in cold climate
  • Review of offshore wind

Offshore wind power

Today's focus on very large offshore structures and the need for cost-effective project execution and logistics puts a high demand on engineering skill and experience. Having designed turbine concepts both for solid foundations and floating substructures makes this one of the focus areas of Scandinavian Wind.

Floating substructures is today to be considered an R&D-intensive technology, with a lot of potential for energy production at a low levelized cost of energy (LCOE) at high wind speed offshore areas outside the zone of visual impact from the shore. Our experience from development of floating wind turbines includes conceptual studies, design parameter optimisation, turbine evaluation, integrated wind and hydro (wave, current, marine growth, etc.) load simulations, anchoring studies, project management and more.

Wind turbine inspections

We offer inspections of turbines and subsystems. The comprehensive checklists cover turbine design in general, as well as specifics involving subsystems. Following the inspections we produce a report which describes the results of the review including general comments on the design, as well as remarks specific to the inspected turbine.

The 'punch list' includes defects, risk evaluation and recommended actions. We recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment to ensure that the results of the inspection findings are achieved. Our clients use the inspection results for risk management / mitigation, life-long evaluation, contractual questions, operational optimisation and status checks.

Data analysis

In order to meet client needs, we provide analysis of data collected on single turbines and wind farms. With our extensive knowledge of the design and control of wind turbines, Scandinavian Wind extends our analysis beyond the ordinary. We uncover information that would not have been found in the subsystem itself.

The analysis can take the form of continuous monitoring or temporary efforts to identify abnormalities. In both cases, we compile the results in a customised report.

Loads and system simulation

In order to be successful on turbine simulations and design loads, we have built up a strong aeroelastic simulation environment. The process includes generation of stochastic wind fields and arbitrary turbine designs, procedures for efficient execution (of thousands of load cases to cover latest standards, including IEC 61400-1 ed.3), as well as post-processing to finalise design loads and power curves.

Our load and simulation experiences cover calculation of both general design loads and site-specific loads. Over the years, we have validated turbine behaviour and loads against field measurements, not only for ordinary operation and power curve, but also for extreme events.
